What does BTS’ military discharge mean for the current pop culture scenario?

ARMYs all around the world are currently in the mood for party, as six out of seven BTS members have been discharged from the military. The band members, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook have been in partial hiatus for almost two years. However, they have released individual music time and again. But now that the group is coming back from the military, what does it mean for the current scenario in the global music industry? Will BTS be able to reinstate themselves as the leaders in K-Pop and international music scene? While the same is hard to tell, the members seem hyped about their next activities as musicians.

Here is how BTS’ military discharge can impact the current pop culture scenario. Read on…

1. International K-pop hype

The Hallyu wave is stronger than ever. Bands like BLACKPINK, Stray Kids and SEVENTEEN are currently at the top of the charts. With BTS’ return, the hype is likely to be reignited globally. The group has been dominating charts, even when they aren’t completely active due to military schedules. As they are set to make a comeback again, fans are expecting bigger things in terms of trends and social media recognition.

2. Global diplomacy

BTS has already worked with the UN and the Korean government. Their discharge may lead to a resurgence in their cultural ambassador roles. The group has used their music to bridge countries and youth ideologies. They can speak about important issues, be it related to the youth and global trends.

During his UN speech, the group’s leader, RM had said, “After releasing the Love Yourself albums and launching the Love Myself campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world, how our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves. These stories constantly remind us of our responsibility. So, let’s all take one more step. We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself. I would like to ask all of you. What is your name? What excites you and makes your heart beat? Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, gender identity: speak yourself.”

3. New music

Ever since BTS went for a partial military hiatus, fans have been eager to listen to their comeback group song. While the members have shared individual music over the years, it would be interesting to note how they create an impact as a group. With Tyla, Sabrina Carpenter and Doechii and the BLACKPINK members making waves, it would be interesting to note how the group makes their mark. Post-service BTS may present a more mature and cohesive sound. However, we wish it is more pop-forward and in tune with the times.
