Discover What Beauty Ingredients Are Trending Most on TikTok

With so many major trends and can’t-miss products out there, it can be hard to keep up with the hype. That’s where we come in! We’re diving into TikTok’s beauty scene to get you up to date on the leading ingredients making waves on the app.
TikTok’s Top Trending Skin- and Hair-Care Ingredients
Onion extract is having a major moment on the app, up 309.7 percent. A remedy for hair restoration, this lines up with another quickly growing ingredient: pumpkin seed oil, where searches are up 186.3 percent. With these two gaining so much traction, it’s worth noting that hair loss is an increasingly common issue. From younger generations experiencing stress-induced hair loss to women in menopause experiencing shedding, hair restoration is more than a trend.
On the skin-care side of the app, manuka honey and glycolic acid are getting time in the limelight. Manuka honey, sourced from New Zealand and Australia, is known for its antibacterial activity. As a natural skin-care ingredient, it helps keep skin hydrated and protected. Outside of natural and holistic ingredients, TikTok has landed firmly in the court of glycolic acid (the hashtag has 1.3 million views on the app).
Any Truth to the Hype?
Onion
So far, small studies have indicated that using onion juice has a positive impact on hair loss cases (as compared to tap water).
“Onions are finally getting recognition and are no longer an industry secret as the go-to beauty ingredient,” says trichologist and founder of Colour Collective Kerry E Yates. “Rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, onions offer anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory benefits; they are perfect problem-solvers for hair challenges.”
Pumpkin Seed Oil
There are studies suggesting that pumpkin seed has a positive impact on men with alopecia. It works because pumpkin seed oil contains phytosterols, which inhibit an enzyme that can convert testosterone into DHT (a male sex hormone that contributes to hair loss). More scientific study is needed to determine how well this ingredient works for female hair loss.
Manuka Honey
Recognized for its anti-microbial and wound-healing effects, manuka honey also seems to help skin inflammation.
Glycolic Acid
Out of all of the trending ingredients we’ve covered today, glycolic acid is an expert favorite. Why? It’s a chemical exfoliant that nearly any skin type can use.
“Glycolic acid aids in desquamation of the skin, which is a fancy scientific word for exfoliation,” says Kelly Dobos, cosmetic chemist and president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. “It loosens the desmosome, which are tiny ‘glue’ spots between cells.”
