De Maria numquam satis: Of Mary by no means
sufficient. This saying of St. Bernard is echoed by many different saints.
St. Anselm, as an example, says that it’s unimaginable to find out
the boundaries of God’s grace in elevating Mary’s human nature. St.
Alphonsus says that if there may be something good we will say about
Mary, not opposite to the instructing of the Church and having some
reputable theological foundation, then we must say it. However some
Catholics, to say nothing of Protestants, would object to this type
of Mariology. Are these mere overflows of sentimental piety, or can
they be sustained as a rational strategy to theology?

Fr. Charles Anthony Mary, a Franciscan Friar
of the Immaculate, joins the podcast to argue for why “Marian
Maximalism” is a sound theological place. The Franciscan
custom has at all times been notably robust on our Girl: St.
Francis, St. Bonaventure, Bl. John Duns Scotus, St. Maximilian
Kolbe… Fr. Charles makes the case for “Mary-Maxing”, explains some
of the doctrinal and ecumenical stakes concerned, and takes us
by way of the Franciscan custom, culminating within the cutting-edge
(and controversial) Mariology of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe.
