8 Best Korean Sunscreens for Glowing Results

Korean sunscreen is having a moment this summer. No, this isn’t a new skincare trend, but with more and more of us understanding the importance of wearing the best facial SPF on a daily basis, there is certainly an increased appetite for effective sunscreens that don’t feel greasy or oily on the skin.
Enter, the best Korean sunscreens on the market. These formulas are incredible when it comes to delivering lightweight sun protection alongside a whole host of skincare benefits. As someone with a big interest in Korean skincare, I’ve been busy testing some of the most popular sunscreens, from tinted SPF formulas to sunscreen sticks and more. Plus, I’ve spoken to a range of experts to find out what makes these formulas so good. You’re welcome.
I’ve been testing the best Korean sunscreens.
Is Korean Sunscreen Better Than Western Sunscreen?
First things first, I wanted to explore why Korean sunscreen formulas are so popular. This could definitely be put down to the importance of SPF becoming more prevalent within the beauty community, but one question that I have been getting asked a lot as a beauty editor is whether Korean sunscreen is actually better than Western sunscreen. While this totally comes down to personal preference, I was keen to get expert opinions on whether Korean sunscreens can be considered “better” than other sunscreen formulas.
“Korean sunscreen filters are so advanced, it hardly feels like a traditional sunscreen texture as they are often weightless, hydrating and provide a natural finish,” says Charlotte Cho, esthetician and co-founder of Korean skincare brand Then I Met You.
Yes, Korean sunscreen formulas are a cut above the rest, but there’s no denying that Western sunscreens have come a long way in recent years. Because of this, it’s hard to say whether the answer lies just in the products themselves.
According to Sumin Lee, founder of bestselling Korean skincare brand Beauty of Joseon, it’s also the attitude towards sunscreen that differs. “The difference between Korean and Western sunscreens lies less in the UV filters and more in the way sun protection is integrated into daily skincare,” explains Lee. “In Korea, sunscreen is widely viewed as a natural extension of one’s skincare routine—used year-round, every day and expected to deliver not just protection but also comfort. While sun protection has traditionally been treated as a more functional category in some Western markets, there’s a growing trend toward formulas that emphasise skincare benefits, wearability, and daily use. The beauty philosophies of East and West continue to influence one another, and it’s exciting to see this cross-pollination driving innovation on both sides.”
What Should I Look For in a Korean Sunscreen?
If you want to give a Korean sunscreen a go, I thought it would be handy to ask the experts what to look out for in an effective formula. As explained to me by Lee, when it comes to Korean sunscreens, you are generally in good hands, but there are a few things you can keep an eye on.
“When shopping for a good Korean sunscreen, [you want to] make sure the sunscreen has broad spectrum protection [against] UVA and UVB,” says Cho. “Look for Korean sunscreens that also feature extra [skincare] benefits such as cica for soothing and calming the skin.”
As mentioned above, Korean suncreen formulas are usually super lightweight, but Lee recommends going for a chemical suncreen if you want that signature breathable feel. “Physical (mineral) sunscreen formulas tend to be less dominant in this market,” she explains.
Finally, Lee says to always check for clinical backing on the listed SPF and PA ratings. “Good brands will be transparent about their testing data.”
Can You Buy Korean Sunscreen in the UK?
If, like me, you’re pretty excited about trying a Korean sunscreen out, the best news is that a lot of brands are now available at major retailers around the UK. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some of the most popular formulas, so keep on scrolling to see how I got on when testing Korean sunscreens myself.
The Best Korean Sunscreen, Tried & Tested
1. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50+
Best for All-Round Protection
BEAUTY OF JOSEON
Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50+
SPF rating: 50+
Skin type: All (including sensitive)
Waterproof? No
I’ve been seeing this Korean sunscreen all over social media, and for good reason. The lightweight, non-sticky formula has been designed to feel like a moisturiser, not an SPF, and is suitable for all skin types. It contains 30% rice extract and fermented grain extracts to moisturise and soothe the complexion and leave your skin looking glowy, dewy and bouncy. Yep, you’re definitely going to want to apply your SPF every day when it’s as good as this.
Editor review: “Unlike some SPFs, this one from Beauty of Joseon isn’t heavy or clogging. It has a gel-cream texture that melts into the skin into a truly undetectable and almost watery fluid. It dries into a velvety finish while leaving the skin feeling hydrated. It’s a dream to wear alone or underneath makeup,” says beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden.
Pros
- Lightweight, gel-cream formula
- Moisturises and soothes the skin
- Leaves you with a dewy finish
- High SPF rating
Cons
- Although it’s suitable for all skin types, those of you with oily skin might prefer a matte finish
2. Dr.Jart+ Every Sun Day Ultra Sheer Priming Sunscreen Stick SPF30
Best for On-the-Go
DR.JART+
Every Sun Day Ultra Sheer Priming Sunscreen Stick SPF30
SPF rating: 30
Skin type: All
Waterproof? No
If you want an easy sunscreen for on the go, this sunscreen stick from Korean skincare brand Dr.Jart+ is the answer. Not only is it quick and simple to apply, but it has been made with all skin types in mind. Infused with hyaluronic acid to provide lots of hydration, it gives an invisible, matte finish and works to smooth the look of pores and minimise shine.
My review: I have tried lots of sunscreen sticks, and I often find that they leave a greasy residue on the skin. But not this one. I don’t know how the brand has done it, but this feels completely undetectable straight after applying. SPF has never been so easy.
Pros
- Easy to apply on the go
- Matte finish
- Infused with hyaluronic acid
Cons
- Would recommending using for top ups rather than your morning SPF as it can be hard to apply enough to the skin
3. Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen SPF30
INNISFREE
Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF50
SPF rating: 50
Skin type: Dry
Waterproof? No
If a mineral SPF is what you’re after, let me introduce you to this option from Innisfree. A great option for dry skin types, this SPF combines UVA and UVB protection with a moisturising formula infused with eight types of hyaluronic acid. Oh, and it also features cica to help soothe the skin and even out your skin tone. Of course, it has a super lightweight, non-greasy texture that absorbs in seconds.
Editor review: “This SPF is a firm favourite in my routine. The beauty of Korean skincare formulas is that they are so lightweight, and this SPF is no exception. It has a cream-gel texture and absorbs so quickly, feeling undetectable on the skin,” says beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden.
Pros
- Broad-spectrum protection
- Cream-gel texture
- Super hydrating
Cons
- Not everyone will be a fan of the mineral formula
4. Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF30 PA +++
Best Tinted Korean Sunscreen
BEAUTY OF JOSEON
Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF30 Pa +++
SPF rating: 30
Skin type: Combination
Waterproof? No
If a tinted SPF is what you’re after, then Beauty of Joseon has got you covered. I know I’ve already included an SPF from this brand, but the products are just that good. This product is great for combination skin as it’s the perfect balance between dewy and matte. It has a hydrating, lightweight, silky texture that glides on but also helps to control shine. There are 12 shades available for a wide range of skin tones, and each shade has been designed to enhance your natural complexion and give you a fresh, radiant look.
My review: I’m a big fan of tinted SPFs, and this Beauty of Joseon one is now a firm favourite. One thing I will say is that it’s very sheer, but it’s ideal for no-makeup makeup days. The silky texture is like nothing else I’ve ever tried, and I’m recommending it to everyone I know.
Pros
- Adds a fresh, radiant look
- Helps to control shine
- Silky, lightweight texture
Cons
- Will need to apply a lot for adequate sun protection
5. Laneige Hydro UV Defence EX SPF50
Best Priming Korean SPF
LANEIGE
Hydro UV Defence Ex SPF50
SPF rating: 50
Skin type: Dry
Waterproof? No
Yes, Laneige does great lip products, but did you know that the brand does skincare too? This high-protection SPF has been designed to nourish the skin and soothe sensitive or dry complexions. I personally think it has a bit of a thicker texture than some other SPFs in this roundup, but it never feels greasy or oily. Instead, it creates the perfect base for makeup.
My review: This is one of those SPFs that you just can’t fault. It sinks in quickly, feels amazing on the skin and offers broad-spectrum protection. What more could you want?
Pros
- Hydrating formula
- Sinks in quickly
- Broad-spectrum protection
Cons
- A little thicker than other products in this roundup
6. Anua SPF50 Silky Moisture Sun Cream
Best for Added Skincare Benefits
ANUA
SPF50 Silky Moisture Sun Cream
SPF rating: 50
Skin type: Dry
Waterproof? No
Another great option for dry skin types, this moisturising SPF has lots of amazing skincare benefits. Not only does it offer broad-spectrum protection, but it also features panthenol to lock in hydration and houttuynia cordata extract to provide a soothing effect.
My review: I was shocked by how much this didn’t feel like an SPF. It’s giving my luxury moisturisers a run for their money. Although it has a richer, more moisturising texture, it still sinks into the skin beautifully. It can feel a little sticky for 30 seconds or so, but I just ensure that I give it a couple of minutes before applying my makeup. That being said, once it fully absorbs into the skin, it’s undetectable.
Pros
- Super moisturising
- Broad-spectrum protection
- Undetectable on the skin
Cons
- Might be too rich for some

If you want a glowing complexion, this is the SPF to try. As part of the brand’s Watermelon Glow range, the formula contains lots of nourishing ingredients such as niacinamide, glycerin and watermelon seed oil to add a bright, glowy effect. I know what you’re thinking, couldn’t that leave you looking a little oily? Nope, the lightweight formula is super fast-absorbing.
My review: This is such a gorgeous SPF for underneath makeup, as it adds a radiant effect that I can’t get enough of.
Pros
- Adds a glowy finish
- Very hydrating

Best for Dull Skin
COSRX
Aloe 54.2 Aqua Tone-Up Sunscreen SPF50+
SPF rating: 50+
Skin type: Dull

Corsx has lots of different sunscreens on offer, but this particular one has been designed to brighten the skin. With ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, allantoin and vitamins B12 and B3, it’s certainly a good option if your skin is feeling a little dull or lacklustre. The smooth, creamy texture is as lightweight as you’d expect, and doesn’t leave a hint of residue.
My review: Don’t be alarmed by the fact that this sunscreen has a pale pink hue, as it disappears into the skin in seconds. This sunscreen feels totally weightless. While I didn’t notice a huge difference in my skin right away, I’m excited to give this a go over the next few weeks. The creamy texture makes it a dream to apply, and I could see myself incorporating this into my daily skincare routine with ease.
